PlayRight has just finalised the distribution of music rights for the reference year 2022! This involves a total amount of € 8,491,875.34 in neighbouring rights arising from music recordings that were broadcast and/or exploited in 2022.

As an artist (or an artist’s representative), you now have six months to inform us of any doubts or questions and to lodge an objection or complaint regarding this distribution.

How are these neighbouring rights generated?

The royalties forming the basis of these rights stem from fair remuneration, private copying, remuneration for education and scientific research, and the lending right. These royalties were collected as compensation for music recordings that were broadcast and/or exploited in Belgium in 2022.

In addition to the 2022 distribution (€ 8.455.555,90), the annual supplementary remuneration for 2022 is also being finalised. A total of € 36.319,44 will be distributed for this.

First/final distribution: how does it work?

PlayRight always carries out the distribution of your rights as a musician in two phases. For Music 2022, the company already paid out the first distribution of rights in November 2023.

The deadline for declaring the repertoires that could generate rights for the reference year 2022 was 31 December 2025.

This final distribution completes the payment of neighbouring rights to musicians for this reference year. The total amount of Belgian music rights for 2022 paid out to musicians now stands at 8.491.875,34 million euros.

How are my rights calculated?

For each distribution of your rights as a musician within Belgium, PlayRight links the specified repertoires with:

• Radio stations’ playlists and audience figures;
• The Ultratop sales charts;

When will the next distribution of my royalties take place?

The next distribution will cover the distribution of audiovisual rights for 2022 and cable rights AV for 2015–2022 and will also be the final distribution. This distribution will take place in June 2026.
